The Rev. Cannon
Joanne Izzo

The Rev. Canon Joanne Izzo was called to serve as Interim at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn February 1, 2024.

Prior to her call as Interim at St. Mary’s Canon Izzo served The Rt. Rev. William Chip Stokes as the interim Canon to the Ordinary and transition officer for the XII Bishop of New Jersey and through the initial transition of The Rt. Rev. Sally French XIII bishop of the diocese of New Jersey.

She currently serves as an interim in the diocese of Long Island and a coach for clergy. She has served two other congregations in the diocese of Long Island, Trinity, Roslyn and St John the Evangelist in Lynbrook. She has also served in this diocese as consultant and co-facilitated training for transition consultants.

Ordained as an Episcopal priest in 2014 in the diocese of New York, Canon Izzo has served in several congregations in the diocese of New York. Canon Izzo is trained and certified interim. She worked closely with the canon for transitions to train several cohorts of transition facilitators, member of the anti-racism committee. She has served as consultant in Title III and conflict situations at the request of bishops in several dioceses.

She received her Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University, a Masters in Social Work from New York University, Masters of Divinity from St John’s University, and Masters of Sacred Theology from General Theological Seminary.

Prior to her ordination Canon Izzo served the Department of Veterans Affairs, Brooklyn campus as the Social Work clinical supervisor of the Outpatient Mental Health Services and coordinator of the Social Work graduate training program and developed and implemented the Social Work professional
continuing education program recognized by NYS Education, Office of Professions for Licensed Professions.

Canon Izzo is a native Brooklynite, single with no children and shares an apartment with her 92 year old mother. She loves the Lord and rejoices in unmerited grace to live a life of faithful service of the Gospel for all God’s people. To relax she enjoys long walks, fidgeting with Legos, enjoys Opera, delights in off Broadway productions of almost anything Shakespeare, except drunk Shakespeare. On any given morning Canon Izzo is known to exchange a picture or two with a friend of the changing colors of the dawn sky as well as constellations on a clear at night, always lifted up with a prayer of gratitude to God whose beauty is found in creation and leads to the Glory of God beyond what eye can see and heart/mind can imagine.
